Bill Alley Memorial Regatta

May 17th dawned hot and sunny this year. It was perfect race weather for The Bill Alley Memorial Regatta held at Barnet Marine Park. Since the venue is home to the Barnet crew we always look forward to racing on our home water. This year we were strong and steady and our timing was great. Even the shore supporters commented on our timing. This year’s novices – now no longer goslings but first year members of the crew - have really gotten the hang of timing. This is very impressive to some of us more seasoned paddlers that struggled with timing in our novice years. As well, novice Lynne Davis steered her first two races straight and steady and gave Carol Harris a chance to paddle. Well done, Lynne! We also had Orrie Babiuk calling her first race much to the delight of Brenda Tierney who watched us from shore – always a valuable coaching viewpoint. Our times were really good in spite of the very wavy conditions. It was a great day for Barnet as we packed up, joined the closing ceremony and then retired to the pub!
