Woman’s
Regatta, False Creek, Vancouver
May 24, 2008
Barnet
had a great day in the sunshine and on the water. We loved
dressing up as the Real Spice Girls and showed we are a creative
crew as well as strong, determined and ready to race! Winning
our second race was especially sweet and gave our novices
a taste of that feeling where everything is in sync –
timing, power, passion, spirit, soul and heart!

Deas
Divas had a great time despite our depleted numbers.
Thanks to the other crews for helping us out and we were particularly
proud of our second place finish in our final race of the
day even though we were paddling with 16 versus the other
boats with 20
paddlers.

What a wonderful
day! The Fortitude Crew
in their stunning Oz outfits had a wonderful time as we always
seem to do when we are together. What more could you ask for
in life: great friends, great weather and a wonderful event.
It was wonderful to see all the other teams and wander around
chatting and catching up!

Deas and Fort-itude Crews
The Feisty
Ladies from False Creek
attended their first regatta of 2008 in "buzzing"
form at the ever popular Women's regatta. Our Bugs in a Boat
costume was the creation of Barb Baker and Anne Ling. Our
management team (mothers) for the day were Novices Linda Arato
and Gail Belcher. Unfortunately both ladies were injured early
in the season yet they remain vital members of our crew. They
of course took their "orders" from our "ever
efficient" manager Novice Cathy Marr. Our "goslings"
who took to the water for their first ever race were Tracey,
Elizabeth and Cathy. Tracey was so eager she went head first
into the boat, recovered quickly and raced the whole thing
in one breath!! Chatty Cathy grinning from ear to ear paddled
like a pro while Elizabeth worked quietly in the back section.
You may wonder what we "oldies" were doing while
our Novices worked so splendidly. We paddled as a team, had
lots of fun and reflected on our own Novice year. Now Abreast
Up the Creek are eager to "attack" Rio Tinto/Alcan.

This is by far one of our favourite
regattas of the season – 53 female teams competing from
all over BC and some from the US. The highlight is often the
outrageous costumes that some of the teams come up with and
some actually paddle in these getups! As Abreast
in Richmond has
initials that spell AIR we thought it would be fitting to
do something airy and with an airport/airplane theme due to
our close proximity to the Vancouver Airport. So the Richmond
Air Farce arrived ready to have fun in colourful propeller
beanie hats, glitzy pilot stripes and a tent decorated with
windsocks, airplanes and an Air Farce banner. Of course the
propeller hats had to come off during the 3 – 500 meter
races – we didn’t want to be seen having an unfair
advantage. Our crew did a great job of finishing first in
our last race of the day – we’ve decided we all
reach our “peak” performance in the afternoons!
A great spring day on the water was enjoyed by all.
